Trans-Affirming Therapy in California

(Gender-Affirming Therapy for Transgender and Non-binary Individuals, Couples, and Families)

Are you looking for a therapist who understands trans experiences without needing to explain everything from the beginning? Do you want support with exploring your gender identity in a space that feels safe and affirming? Or are you navigating how your gender journey is affecting your relationships and looking for guidance?

I'm Dr. Lauren Smithee, a queer, PhD-level marriage and family therapist providing trans-affirming therapy virtually throughout California. I have years of specialized training in the WPATH Standards of Care and deep experience working with transgender and non-binary individuals, couples navigating transition together, and families adjusting to a loved one's gender journey.

I know that finding a therapist who is truly knowledgeable about trans experiences can be exhausting. You deserve a therapist who celebrates your identity, understands the unique challenges trans people face, and can support you without judgment.

Together, we can work on:

  • exploring your gender identity at your own pace

  • coping with gender dysphoria

  • processing experiences of discrimination, rejection, or microaggressions

  • navigating relationships during transition

  • supporting your mental health while pursuing gender-affirming care

  • strengthening your sense of self and self-compassion

I also specialize in working with couples where one or both partners are trans or non-binary, or where a partner is exploring their gender identity. Whether you're seeking individual support or want to strengthen your relationship during this time, I'm here to help.

I offer virtual sessions at times that fit busy schedules, including early mornings, evenings Monday through Friday, and Saturday mornings.

I see clients throughout California, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Jose.
