LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

(Queer Counseling for Individuals, Relationships, and Families)

Do you need an LGBTQIA+ therapist who understands the ins and outs of queer experiences and relationships? I’m a sapphic, queer, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist who has been in a same-gender relationship for the past eleven years. I am passionate about providing nurturing and compassionate therapy for folks who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, or who otherwise identify under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.

I know personally and professionally some of the stressors living in a heteronormative and cisnormative world can bring when you are part of the LGBTQIA+ community:

  • coming out to family and friends

  • navigating homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism

  • coping with discrimination and microaggressions

Despite how strong you are, these stressors can really take their toll. I understand that on top of dealing with typical relational stressors such as miscommunications or busy schedules, queer couples can also face unique challenges such as co-parenting in a heteronormative and cisnormative world, rejection or discrimination towards your identities and your relationship, and dealing with microaggressions that can compound those stressors.

At the same time, providing LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy doesn't have to mean focusing on your gender or sexuality. Being a knowledgeable queer therapist means I'm also here to provide a supportive environment in which we can work together on other goals such as counseling for coping skills, anxiety, stress, depression, communication skills, and self-care.

What is a queer-affirming therapist?

I’m here to support and guide you through the unique challenges queer individuals, couples, and families can face. I provide LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy that celebrates a positive view of queer identities and relationships.

To me, being an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist means providing unconditional positive regard to my clients, being your advocate, and providing a supportive space to help you self-reflect, while being up to date on the latest research. We will hold space together to talk about some of the challenges that come with living in a transphobic and heteronormative world, especially in Utah.

At the same time, being an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist means that we will celebrate stories of your resilience, and growth and can work to strengthen your self-compassion.

Together, we can work on goals such as:

  • improving communication through LGBTQIA+ affirming relationship counseling

  • healing from internalized homophobia and/or transphobia

  • strengthening self-compassion

  • increasing coping skills when faced with microaggressions or other stressors

  • setting boundaries

  • exploring your thoughts and feelings about your gender and/or sexuality

  • coping with issues unrelated to your gender and sexuality such as anxiety, stress, and depression

  • and most importantly- drawing upon your inner sources of strength to help you to thrive and be your best self.
