LGBTQIA+ Couples Therapy in Utah
(Queer Couples Counseling for Partners in Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo, Ogden, and Throughout Utah)
Finding a couples therapist who truly understands LGBTQ relationships can be difficult, especially in Utah. You deserve a therapist who does not just tolerate your identity but affirms it, someone who understands the unique joys and challenges of queer relationships without needing you to explain or justify who you are.
I'm Dr. Lauren Smithee, a queer, PhD-level marriage and family therapist offering virtual LGBTQ couples therapy throughout Utah. Whether you are in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, Park City, or anywhere else in the state, I can work with you and your partner from the comfort of your own home. I've been in a same-gender relationship for over 15 years, and I bring both personal understanding and professional expertise to my work with queer couples.
Why LGBTQIA+ Couples Need Affirming Therapy
Every couple faces challenges, but LGBTQ couples often navigate additional layers of complexity. You may be dealing with:
-
Minority stress and its impact on your relationship. The cumulative weight of living in a world that does not always accept you can create tension, anxiety, and conflict within your relationship. Sometimes this stress shows up in ways that are hard to recognize or name.
-
Family rejection or lack of support. When families of origin do not fully accept your relationship, it can create grief, anger, and difficult decisions about boundaries. This lack of external support can also put extra pressure on your partnership.
-
Coming out at different stages. If you and your partner are at different points in your coming out journeys, this can create friction around visibility, safety, and how you move through the world together.
-
Navigating heteronormative expectations. Without built-in scripts for how relationships should look, LGBTQ couples have the freedom to create their own rules, but this can also lead to confusion or conflict when partners have different visions.
-
Internalized stigma. Growing up in a society that often devalues queer relationships can leave marks that affect how you show up in your own partnership, sometimes in ways you do not even realize.
A therapist who does not understand these dynamics cannot fully help you. Worse, a therapist who holds subtle biases can cause real harm, even with good intentions.
My Approach to LGBTQ Couples Therapy
I use the Gottman Method, one of the most research-backed approaches to couples therapy, adapted to be fully affirming of LGBTQ relationships, blended with an attachment-focused lens. This means you get practical, evidence-based tools for improving communication, managing conflict, and deepening connection, delivered by someone who genuinely understands your experience.
In our work together, you will learn how to:
-
Communicate your needs without triggering defensiveness
-
Repair after conflict so that arguments bring you closer rather than driving you apart
-
Understand how your individual attachment styles shape your relationship patterns
-
Navigate external stressors like family dynamics, discrimination, and minority stress
-
Build a shared vision for your future as a couple
I also draw on attachment theory and emotionally focused approaches to help you understand the deeper emotional patterns driving your conflicts. When you understand why you react the way you do, change becomes possible.
Virtual Therapy Throughout Utah
All sessions are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant video, which means you can access affirming couples therapy no matter where you live in Utah. Virtual therapy offers several advantages:
-
No commute, which makes it easier to fit sessions into busy schedules
-
More privacy, especially important in smaller communities
-
The comfort of being in your own space during vulnerable conversations
Whether you are in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah County, Cache Valley, or southern Utah, I can work with you.
